Understanding the difficulty level of the hikes

Classification of difficulty levels of the hikes proposed, according to Hiking Como Lake.

The difficulty  level  consists of two elements:

• a letter that defines the type of terrain on which the hike will take place

• a number that defines the degree of physical effort required for the hike

It is a scale created by Hiking Como Lake and based on the experience of its guides.

The difficulties take the presence of the guide into account. If faced autonomously, the degree of difficulty of the hike may not correspond to what is indicated in this website.

Kind of terrain on which the hike takes place:

A

The hike takes place above all on well-marked paths, alleys or mule tracks, without or almost non-existent technical difficulties. However,  it is a hike in a natural and mountainous territory, so steep uphill or downhill stretches are likely to be found.

B

The hike takes place mainly on paths and / or mule tracks and / or country paths, which do not present significant technical difficulties. However, some parts may be rather narrow, uneven and / or have steep slopes. In any case the progression is feasible without having to use your hands or any tools (e.g. ropes, crampons, harness).

C

The hike takes place on paths that are not always clear or well-marked, sometimes on paths scarcely visible, and / or on grassy and / or rocky slopes. The progression can be difficult in narrow and/or steep stretches of some length. In any case progression is feasible without the aid of any tools (e.g. ropes, crampons, ice-axes). Sometimes hands can be used to facilitate progression and balance.

Levels of the physical training required:

1

Suitable for everyone in a state of good health.  The hike requires a minimum degree of training and resistance to tiredness. Running shoes with lug soles are allowed.

2

Suitable for people with a good level of fitness. The hike requires a good degree of training and resistance to fatigue, and the ability to walk for more than 4 consecutive hours if necessary. Trekking shoes with lug soles are required.

3

Suitable for people with excellent training, resistance to fatigue and good hiking experience also at high altitudes. The hike requires ability to walk in a mountainous environment, even off track and/or in bad weather conditions (wind, cold, heat). Trekking boots are required.
